Soft Clowning: Community & Protest.
A Level 3 workshop exploring the clown as rebel, outsider, and change-maker.
6 weeks of subversive play, absurd ritual, and embodied resistance.
In this advanced course, we expand the Soft Clown’s tender core toward the world, toward each other, toward the mess. Drawing inspiration from bouffon, street performance and physical theater traditions, we explore how clowns provoke and disrupt in service of the collective.
This is a space for group expression, physical satire, and poetic rebellion. Channel the artist who feels too much, sees too much, but still wants to dance alongside chaos with wide eyes and an open heart.
We’ll play with ensemble building, grotesque and surreal physicality, parody, protest, and ritual. We’ll blur the line between spectacle and spectator. We’ll make each other braver. Say it with your chest— we’re all outcasts. Laugh until it shifts.
Explore and Create Through:
Satire, Mockery & Poetic Parody
The Bouffon Body: Grotesque, Gorgeous, and Free
Protest as Performance
The Clown as Trickster, Mirror, and Mirror-Breaker
Devising Ensemble Pieces for Public or Site-Specific Spaces
Holding Space for Grief, Joy, and Subversion

Bio:Natasha Mercado is an actress, director, producer, writer and theatre arts educator— but always a clown. You can see her on Adult Swim, Amazon, HBO, TBS and stages across LA. She created “Send in the Clowns”, the first monthly clown show at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre and is touring her award-winning solo show “Tree” —which was called “one of LA’s Top Ten Shows” and “a must see” by Stage Raw and the Times Colonist. She is also a teaching artist for the Unusual Suspects whose mission is to champion those most needed to be heard by mentoring youth to write and perform their stories by using theater. She has virtually taught adults and children at Stomping Ground Comedy Theatre along with a workshop called “Playful Mindfulness” sponsored by the National Alzheimer’s Association to implement improv into the world of caregiving. In 2020, she was named an “Emerging Content Creator” by the National Association of Latino Independent Producers. She was a director and producer for branded events at UCB and brought customized comedy programs to groups across the country including improv, sketch, storytelling and public speaking intensives.
“I found that the concepts introduced in Natasha’s [class] add an extra dimension to any creative field and the experience of life in general. I feel liberated, empowered, and awakened from the exercises we did and am forever changed.” —Elora L., 2021 Student
