Nothing to Something, Volume 2
A 3-hour creative hustle
Enter with nothing. Leave with something. Revised for 2026, this workshop is an all-levels speed-run to discover new ideas and build creative process tools. This year, Nothing to Something focuses on ideation through engaging our senses as gateways to unexpected creative territory.
Using your senses as a springboard alongside personal memory, task-based theatre, and chance—you will develop the start of something. Expect to be actively engaged in solo and group exercises, fast decision-making, and happenstance challenges that irrevocably change your precious ideas. This workshop fuses anti-pretending techniques developed by the Neo-Futurists with modes of playwriting and devising to stoke creative inspiration.
This is for writers, directors, clowns, and creatives of any experience level. This is not about mastering a specific performance style or genre, but creating a springboard for your next project. Walk away with foundational tools to change up your creative process.

Bio:
Adam Smith is a Los Angeles-based, award-winning writer, director and performer. His work has been charted as "Low Brow/Brilliant" by New York Magazine's Approval Matrix. Together with Arletta Anderson, he devises work that's sometimes theatre, sometimes dance, usually in-between. His recent pieces include RERUN, a competition show that turns classic tv episodes and specials into an absurd contest between 3 competitors and Play About a Woman, an immersive celebration of a random audience member's life.
He has taught writing, devised theatre techniques and creative process for over 10 years in San Francisco, Los Angeles and beyond.
Adam is a former member of the New York Neo-Futurist collective and was the founding artistic director of the San Francisco Neo-Futurists, most known for their long-running show The Infinite Wrench (fka Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind), an ongoing, everchanging attempt to perform thirty original plays in an hour.
