Bouffon for Social Change with Grayson Morris
Bouffon is a nuanced artform. While bouffons are agents of social critique and social change, their message is inherently covert. Throughout history, people have communicated messages of freedom and uprising against injustice through art, especially comedy. In dire circumstances, these messages have been targeted at precisely the level of subtlety where they can be understood by the people, but not the authorities. Bouffon is an artform both timeless and timely, painfully relevant to us here and now. It is also very dumb and a lot of fun. In the midst of encroaching fascism, wouldn’t it be cool if the streets of Los Angeles were full of troupes upon troupes of horrifying, dazzling bouffons?
Bio:
Grayson Morris is a multidisciplinary comedy artist originally from Asheville, NC. She has studied clown for the past 11 years with some of the greats including Norman Taylor, Aitor Basauri, and Mic Barnfather, and has studied movement with Movement Theatre Studio of New York, Emmanuelle Delpech, and Julie Becton Gillum. She has taught clown for four years in Los Angeles at The Elysian Theater, Public Displays of Altadena, The Clubhouse, the Lyric Hyperion, and Thymele Arts. Her pedagogy for theatrical clown incorporates elements of red nose clown and bouffon, and focuses on actively supporting students in developing their sensitivity and connection to the audience. She creates a safe environment where people can take risks and fail in an honest way--always accountable to their audience.
Grayson was a founding member of the bouffon troupe Mil Grus, which took Hollywood by storm in 2019 with a sold out run at The Hollywood Fringe Festival, winning an Encore Award and Pick of the Fringe and went on to perform at The Fringe Encore Series Off-Broadway at the Soho Playhouse. She took home another Encore award in 2022 with her existential immersive/puppet/clown solo show, Mother Nature. She was also a founding member of the LA-based bouffon troupe iL FUNGO, and is currently directing her newest bouffon troupe Ooh La La. She is one half of a very stupid duo called The Pointy Sisters.
A former standup comedian, Grayson has appeared in The Great American Comedy Festival and Limestone Comedy Festival, and has toured the nation with her first solo show, Am I a Grownup Yet? She has opened for Maria Bamford and Louis C.K. and appeared on AXS TV’s Gotham Comedy Live. A lifelong puppeteer, Grayson has appeared in numerous puppet slams with original shorts and co-founded Street Creature giant puppet collective in Asheville, NC. She co-produced The Tiny Paper Theater Festival, an international tiny puppet festival that took place online during Covid. She has taught puppetry to children and adults for 15 years.
