The Mushroom Cure

June 20th & June 21st at 8pm.

They say that laughter is the best medicine, but for one comedian suffering from obsessive compulsive disorder, it just might be psychedelic mushrooms. The Mushroom Cure is the hilarious, harrowing and heartrending tale of how Adam Strauss tried to treat his severe OCD with psychedelics. After extended, sold-out runs in NYC and SF, the show makes its LA premier at the Lyric for two nights only. Directed by Jonathan Libman. themushroomcure.com

Back in the Closet

TWO DATES - 6/21 + 6/22, @ 10PM

Tickets ($7): https://www.eventbrite.com/e/back-in-the-closet-tickets-46638171025

Former US Figure skating champion turned comedian Roman Fraden invites you to take a cosmic journey Back in the Closet- his uproarious personal odyssey through motel rooms with Tonya Harding, catastrophic Grindr hookups, and the upsetting story behind why Sting once called him "the pussy of a plant" .

After extensive touring throughout the United States, Roman is making his Edinburgh Fringe debut in 2018. He's transformed thousands of hours of grueling skate practice plus a useless psych degree into a uniquely hilarious new one-man show, weaving incredibly revealing stand-up, original music, and outrageous physical comedy into a master takedown of modern life.

From riffs on contemporary culture, the challenges of anonymous sexual escapades, and piercing analysis of the most common and universal topics, Roman’s show daringly walks a tightrope between an orgiastic celebration of a hedonistic lifestyle whilst simultaneously providing a penetrating dissection of its very essence... often within the same breath. This unique perspective makes Back In The Closet an exceptionally fun experience for all audiences. Jam packed with original music, insightful stand-up, and absurd satire, this debut hour promises to leave a lasting impression.

Roman has toured the US extensively as a stand- up comic, and is a regular performer at classic Hollywood venues including The Comedy Store, The Laugh Factory, and The Hollywood Improv. He has trained with Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB) Theatre in Los Angeles, performed in various ensemble casts in film and on stage, and has been featured in The New York Times and USA Today. Back In The Closet makes it's world premiere at Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2018.

Stephen Adly Guirgis is our new reigning poet of the obscene. He's a master when it comes to creating troubled New Yorkers whose uninhibited talking jags reveal far more about them than they ever intended; more than any other contemporary playwright, his dialogue crackles with profane comedy that, no matter how stylized, seems absolutely true of his characters. Focusing on the challenges of recovery from addiction and what he sees as a fundamental disconnect between men and women, Guirgis spins a comic tragedy out of a situation that would almost certainly be described by one of his characters as totally f-ked up."
Lighting and Sound America.
"Guirgis, a brilliant comedic talent also has an original and knowing take on class, particularly as it plays out among the bottom-of-the-barrel working-class poor, who are virtually invisible to the wealthier men and women around them. Guirgis' characters are strivers who lack the language to 'pass' in a white-collar world; they're frustrated by limitations that they're only half aware of, and that frustration provides much of the painful hilarity in their dialogue, which piles miscommunication on top of misunderstanding."
New Yorker.
"It's tight, smart and splendidly well-made, a tough-minded, unromantically romantic comedy that keeps you laughing, then sends you home thinking."
Wall Street Journal.
"Funny indeed, not to mention surprising, disturbing and poignantly dark, a deeply rich comedy.  By not putting characters or their dilemmas in neat boxes, Guirgis gives us, in HAT, a slice of hard life that's as provocative as it is absorbing."
USA Today.

Obviously, adult language, sexual situations & adult themes.

_______

After years of studying, performing, and writing a wide range of music separate of one another, Los Angeles-native twin brothers Jack and Benny Lipson united to birth the project jackbenny, which injects musical theater storytelling into the gamut of artistic styles they continue to explore. The duo shared their debut show in 2016 with musician-comedian Reggie Watts, and have since played sold-out concerts in Los Angeles, New York, Sheridan, Wyoming, where they presented their “musicalette,” Miranda, Please! through the Wyoming Theater Festival, and even in Falam, Myanmar at the Chin Cultural Festival. Last November, Lifetime commissioned Jack and Benny to arrange Burton Lane and Ralph Freed’s “How About You,” featured in the holiday special Snowed Inn Christmas with Bethany Joy Lenz. The Lipsons are developing a 3-character musical theater song cycle of their original songs that they plan to produce later this year. jackbenny performs once a month at the Lyric Hyperion Theater in Silver Lake, Los Angeles.

Cheers (The Show!)

Cheers is the best sitcom of all time. That’s why Brian McGovern created Cheers The Show: The Show.

Tickets ($8): https://www.eventbrite.com/e/cheers-the-show-tickets-46136990982

CTS:TS is a bunch of new Cheers scenes written and performed by a bunch of funny people. Each one serving as the first scene of an imagined episode, these cold opens will be performed one after another after another. It’s a weird Groundhog Day nightmare that is also FUNNY!!!

The original cold opens vary between heartfelt homages and obscene satire. They are filled with talking mops, deadly viruses, and pretentious literary references. The only rules given to writers were that the scenes must include the characters of Cheers and take place in the bar.

It’s a celebration of one of the most classic of classic sitcoms while also being a total dismantling of the format itself. And did we mention it’s FUNNY!?!?!

Featuring:

Dan Torson as Sam Malone

Katy Fullan as Diane Chambers

John O’Toole as Norm

Genetra Tull as Cliff

Lauren Knutti as Carla

Elizabeth Schantz as Coach

Jackie Durruthy as Dr. Frasier Crane

Lee Barats as Woody

with: Ryan Coil, Caitlin Linden, and Sarah Hoffman

Hey New Hollywood! We're back for another installment of Red Carpet Comedy and we have some questions for you: remember when we were all virgins and the internet was new? Remember asking Mom or Dad if it was cool to take up the landline so we go LOG ON to CONNECT with our AIM crushes after school? We’re here to bring you a night of unloading the mundane bullshit of real life and asking you to sign on to a hilarious night on the town at the Lyric Hyperion. This month's lineup tickles our funny bone and gives us that stranger-in-a-chatroom excitement! We are proud to present:

Teresa Lee

Anthony Desamito

Scott Luhrs

Jessica Lange

Ismael Loutfi

Papp Johnson

Cocktail hour starts at 9:15pm, Show starts at 10. Walk the red carpet and show us your old AIM Screen name to enter our OLD INTERNET PACKAGE RAFFLE!
